Last week, I was reading an article about the demolition of a certain church by China’s government. Apparently, the Government of China had brought down a popular, evangelical mega-church. By the time I got to the end of the story, I found myself wondering why some nations infringe on their people’s freedom of worship. And that is the topic I will be attempting to address in today’s article. I will be trying to unearth the real reasons as to why some nations infringe on their people’s freedom of worship.
Many experts seem to be of the view that some nations infringe on their people’s freedom of worship because they view it as a threat! There are, for instance, some nations where firm political and social control is exercised through political parties. Such nations are uncomfortable with any alternative centers of power. And an independent church can, unfortunately, grow into an alternative center of power. So they are uncomfortable with such independent churches.
Surprisingly, such nations are often willing to grant their people almost full economic freedom. That is where you even find workers in such nations having HR sites, modeled along the same lines as www.paycomonline.com. Such websites, which are designed to work in a manner similar to www.paycomonline.com, cater for employees’ needs. To the extent that employers are having to create such sites, you know that you are dealing with economically empowered people. Yet the same nations are reluctant to give the same people complete social and political freedom. With respect to the freedom of worship, for instance, they realize that churches can easily turn into avenues for infiltration.
Further, some nations know that if they grant people full freedom of worship, the people will start demanding for other freedoms. Soon, for instance, the people will start demanding for the freedom to picket. Then they will start demanding the freedom of speech. Then they will start demanding for freedom to elect leaders of their choice… and the government’s hold on power will be threatened. So they opt to nip the whole thing in the bud – by infringing even on the seemingly ‘harmless’ freedoms – such as the freedom of worship.
